The Wuhan University Zhongnan Hospital Optics Valley campus — also the Optics Valley People's Hospital — officially opened on October 29, Jimu News reported. Built to top-tier tertiary standards, it is the first district-owned public hospital in the East Lake High-Tech Development Zone and China's first hospital co-built by government, a hospital and AI enterprises, with 70% of its medical devices developed and produced by local Optics Valley firms.

A smart hospital: clinical workflows and data systems in a modern medical space

The hospital is the core vehicle for Optics Valley's AI-hospital program, using large models and machine vision to assist triage, imaging diagnosis, case-note generation and surgical-robot operations. The on-site AI product chain runs deep: Mindray's "Qiyuan" laboratory model completes complex-case analysis and review in 1 minute with clinical agreement above 93%; United Imaging's "Yuanzhi" multimodal model upgrades AI from assisted scan-reading to full-workflow intelligence; and Huaclean's overhead rail system delivers medications along the ceiling.

Operationally, the hospital runs a "district-owned, entrusted management" model — operated as one entity with Zhongnan Hospital under unified clinical protocols, pathways and quality controls, with specialists from the main campus rotating in for clinics, rounds and surgery. Liang Chen, vice president of Zhongnan Hospital and president of the Optics Valley campus, said the hospital will focus AI on care, service and management while giving Optics Valley's life-health industry a clinical base and application platform.

The notable part is the structure, not any single technology: government provides the site, the hospital brings clinical standards, and companies supply devices and algorithms — sharply shortening the distance between an AI product entering a hospital and becoming part of its workflow. For Optics Valley's AI and biotech firms, the hospital is both a service window and a real-world validation ground.

Over the past year, hospital AI mostly advanced through single-department pilots. Optics Valley has put device makers, model developers and hospital operations in one building — the test now is whether whole-hospital AI is workable at scale, and its running data will tell.
